John Beck is a Raven
Written by Sadler on May 3, 2009 – 10:05 pm -We all know that Joe Flacco is the man at the helm this year. Now, it’s up to the coaching staff to decide who is in the pecking order behind him.
John Beck is the 2nd QB (Drew Willy being the other) to be brought into the Ravens camp this spring. So that leaves 4 QB’s in waiting if Flacco goes down. 1- Troy Smith 2 - John Beck 3 - Todd Bauman 4- Drew Willy.
Beck is a Cam Cameron guy from Cam’s short-lived Dolphins days. He has some game expereince and possible pro potential. I wouldn’t be surpised to see him step into the number 2 spot. Does this free Troy Smith to become more a slash player? or is Troy Smith flat out better than this dude? Thoughts? Does it matter?

A healthy Troy Smith isn’t bad; he’s just really short. He’s really good to come in for tricky packages out of a spread formation, and is a solid back-up.

Troy Smith gets more hype than for doing pretty much nothing than any player I can remember.
His attitude throughout his tenure in Baltimore has been less than stellar. It’s been reported by numerous people that he feels he is owed something and that his ego far outweighs what he’s actually done in the NFL (which is very little).
The “wildcat” offense we ran was more trouble than it was worth. It ate up time outs because of troubling getting the right personnel in and besides that pass to Flacco down the sideline vs a horrible team, it really wasn’t much of an asset.
IMO this is Smith’s last year on the team as his rookie contract runs out after this season.
If Beck plays decently in camp and the preseason, I could see him signing a multi year deal to back up Flacco.

Now that Bouman has been cut, I doubt this would happen, but Mark I was curious to know if you thought Smith has any trade value. Like you said he has done very little, but I wonder if the rest of the league sees him as a guy who can some day be a starter. I just wonder if he could fetch a late round pick if the Ravens were to move him in training camp.

I don’t think he has any trade value. The guy was the last pick of a the 5th round and has shown very little.
The “buzz” around Smith is concentrated in the Baltimore area only. Some idiot radio personalities seem to think he deserved to start when he got back from his illness last year. And so did he.
If the Ravens could get anything for Smith, I’d be surprised. To be honest, I wouldn’t be shocked if they released him if Beck shows to be a capable backup.

I guess the writing is on the wall for T. Smith in Ravens land. Troy we hardly knew ya!

I guess they dont show Ohio State Games in Baltimore. How does the best player in the country in 2006 slide to 5th round pick? Hes not tall enoough? He played behind a huge line at ohio state with 2 tackles over 6ft 6inchs and threw 30 tds in a offense with 2 runningbacks. Everyone was really high on him until the national championship game which appparently redefined his whole career. The ravens Defense won most of the games last year. Flacco just played good enough butI think Troy Smith would have won more games than Flacco.

I think we have our first Ravens player commenting on the blog. Clearly “John” is Terrell Suggs. Welcome Terrell and thanks for always standing by Troy.
John, while I and many Ravens fans would agree that Flacco benefited from a strong D and a pounding running game, few would argue that Smith would have done any better than 11 wins and a trip to the AFC championship game.
Whaen you break it down Flacco has ideal size and much more talent in his right arm than Smith. Flacco is the future of the Ravens and if it were close there would be several teams beating on the Ravens door to trade for Smith.
Also, citing Smith’s college career is irrelevant when comparing him to Flacco. The CAA compares very favorably to the Big Ten these days.
