Can the Ravens Re-Sign Scott and Lewis? Maybe.

Written by Sadler on February 26, 2009 – 12:42 pm -

The last Ozzie Newsome talked to the press about his ability to re-sign linebackers Ray Lewis and Bart Scott, he didn’t have any answers.

“I can’t answer that question.  We’re making progress. We’re continuing to talk.”

In the meantime, that progress might have been greatly helped with word from the Sporting News is that the team has cut off talks with Center Jason Brown, meaning that the first “domino has fallen” according to Albert Breer.

According to an NFL source, the club has informed center Jason Brown that he is not in their plans for the 2009 season.

Brown, who turns 26 in June, is expected to garner immediate, strong interest from four or five clubs when the NFL’s free-agency period opens at 12:01 a.m. Friday. Brown started in ‘06 and ‘07 at guard for the Ravens, before moving to center to replace Mike Flynn last season.

The move to let Brown leave allows Baltimore to focus on its two free-agent linebackers, Bart Scott and Ray Lewis.

Negotiations are ongoing with both players — with the expectation that the Ravens will be able re-sign one, but not both — and are expected to run up to midnight, when the club will lose exclusive negotiating rights.

I just posted this on the Brown article but it applies here as well.

    Brown is all but gone.

Look for him to be a Skin. They seem to love our centers.

    Ray to Jets?

Having Suggs eating up over 10 million of the cap has absolutely hamstrung this team. It did last year when they could’ve approached Brown about an extension and it’s the same thing again.

If the Ravens end up with only Scott back (Suggs we know is back), that’s not a good scenario. The Ravens are hoping Ray will not see anything close to what he thinks he will and comes back at their price. We’ll see.

Preston is saying the Ravens and Bart are about $400k to $700k apart from getting a deal done.

Mark I tend to agree with you and think that Ray will not get the offers tha the is hoping for. While the Cowboys are an attractive option for Ray, they are trying to extend Ware and don’t appear to have enough space to offer a big deal to both. And the Jets have the cap room and Rex Ryan, but are they that attractive to Ray minus Favre?

I am still suprised that Brown is all but gone.

I’m not surprised in the least that Ray would end up a Jet. It’s all about cash for him and that will be proven if he indeed does go to NY with the QB situation they have.

Brown is gonna get a monster deal and the Ravens offer isn’t close to what he will garner from other teams. It’s ashame to lose a guy like that. He should’ve been extended last year to avoid this.

I really think Ozzie is on his heels right now and he’s pitting Scott vs Lewis and seeing who bites first.
